ASTRAL SLEEP: Astral Doom Musick
Astral Sleep’s new album Astral Doom Musick (Saarni Records, 2020) is the band’s 3rd full-length album, following the previous full-length Visions (Solitude Productions, 2012), and intervening EP Subconsciousnesslesskoe (Independent, 2015).
Astral Doom Musick is an offspring to these previous works, combining the highly detailed pristiveness and massiveness of Visions’ epic death doom with the more experimental aspects of Subconsciousnesslesskoe’s psychedelic doom jams.
Astral Doom Musick is thus the group's definitive creation that sets the frames for the artistic vision, entailing musical, visual and narrative aspects. The album in its entirety is like life itself—beautiful yet horrid, complex and multi-layered, ever-changing and in constant movement.
The album consists of four massive songs and 44 minutes of experimental doom metal on detailed, organic and powerful audio track. The songs are accompanied by ornamental artwork and board game incorporated in the 12” gatefold 180 g vinyl edition.
Astral Doom Musick – the board game delivers the full album experience, independently or in unity with the vinyl album. The compined entity offers an in-depth experience of the album’s mythological world. Game tells the album narrative through a 12-page game book, and lets the players experience the story in an interactive old-school fun way. The game is playable solo, or with multiple players, and requires minimal preparations.
Astral Doom Musick is designed to offer a lot for music lovers and board gamers alike, and withstand the test of time.
The album opener Vril is an epic doom track that takes the listener through an archaic temple in search for mystic life force.
Integratron is a stoner - driven piece of doom that depicts a journey through desert after starborn mysteries and ancient wisdom.
B-side is opened by the soul crushing sounds of a devastated warscape of Schwerbelastungkörper. Madness, mental collapse and a rise from the ashes.
By Aurinko ja Kuu (Sun & Moon), the album reaches a closure in definite astral doom musick with the sense of home-coming, yet deep despair under the wrath of gods.
Astral Sleep: Biography
Astral Sleep is an Experimental Doom Metal band from Finland, Tellus. The group has wreaked havoc on the metal genre since 2005. Astral Doom Musick is the band’s sixth and most recent release.
Astral Sleep was founded in 2004 in Tampere, Finland by Markus Heinonen (e.g. Satan’s Fall, Night of Suicide, Kausalgia, Stone Ship) in vocals and guitar, Jaakko Oksanen (e.g. Valoton, Vesperith, Sightless) in bass and Rolle Heinonen in lead guitar. Later on, the band recruited Jiri Pyörälä as drummer (2008) and Aaro Haverinen as guitarist (2019).
Over the course of its production, the band has become acknowledged for a cross-disciplinary approach that aims at narrating variable states of mind and spirit—worlds where the verges of dreams and madness intersect with those of astral dimensions. Accordingly, musical building blocks blend together into monstrous chimeras dictated by the narrative.

Visions in doom-metal.com (album of the month 3/2013):
"There is a thin line between genius and insanity, so they say, and, if so, Astral Sleep's trajectory straddles both sides of it like a high-top juggernaut thrashing down the central reservation, one set of wheels on each carriageway and the throttle wide open."

"This debut demo is easy to recommend for mad doom metal fanatics, as there's a good funeral doom piece and absolutely splendid heavy doom metal piece. Demo of the year 2005. Astral Sleep, I need some of it."
